# How to check automatic cat feeder portions in grams

“One portion” sounds reassuringly specific until you ask how much food it is. Goldfish would prefer we left that open to interpretation.

## The short answer

**Weigh several separate dispenses of your usual compatible food at the same feeder setting, then record both the average and the variation.** Use the [weighing steps](#weigh), [worked example](#example) and [blank recording table](#record) below. ## How many grams is one automatic feeder portion?

There is no single answer across feeders. A setting may describe a turn of a dispensing mechanism or a compartment of food. The weight depends on the machine and the food passing through it.

For example, [PETKIT describes a Fresh Element Solo portion as about 10g](https://www.petkit.com/products/fresh-element-solo?ref=catstandard.co.uk). “About” matters. It is a model-specific manufacturer figure, not a conversion to apply to every feeder or a measurement of your bag of kibble.

Check the manual's permitted food type and kibble size first. This guide concerns hopper feeders that dispense dry food. For a rotating tray feeder, weigh the food you put into each compartment instead.

Keep the feeding allowance separate from the machine setting. Follow any feeding plan your vet has prescribed. If you combine foods, use the appropriate mixed-feeding guidance; wet and dry food are not interchangeable gram for gram.

## How to weigh automatic cat feeder portions

You need the feeder's instructions, your usual compatible food, a clean dry bowl, a kitchen scale that reads in grams and somewhere to record the results. A suitable scale you already own is fine.

1. **Set up the scale.** Use a firm, level surface and check its instructions, including minimum load and capacity. Small portions need a scale suited to small amounts. A 1g display cannot show a change of a few tenths of a gram; extra decimal places alone do not prove accuracy.
2. **Record the setup.** Note the feeder model, exact food variety, portion setting, hopper level and whether this is a scheduled or manual dispense. Keep those conditions consistent for the initial comparison.
3. **Tare the empty bowl.** Put it on the scale and press tare/zero so the display reads 0g. You want the food's weight, not the crockery's contribution.
4. **Observe a dispense.** Collect what actually reaches the bowl before your cat eats any. Weigh it promptly in the tared bowl. Keep the feeder in its normal operating position; move the bowl to the scale if necessary.
5. **Record the reading and any problem.** Note spills, food left at the outlet or no dispense. Don't quietly add retained food to the bowl and call it an ordinary result. Keep hands out of a moving dispenser.
6. **Repeat separately.** Empty and re-tare the bowl between readings. Five readings make a useful starting record, not a reliability certificate. Observe scheduled meals over several feeds so you check the setting you actually use; label manual-button checks separately.

Count food used for checks within the normal feeding plan. There is no need to serve five extra meals to obtain five readings, however compelling the representations from under the table.

If you use different settings at different meal times, check each one. Don't assume that measuring a single-unit setting proves the output of a larger setting.

## A worked example: average and variation

**These numbers are invented to explain the calculation.** They are not Goldfish's results or a test of a named feeder. Imagine five separate dispenses at the same setting:

**Total: 50g. Average: 50 ÷ 5 = 10g per dispense. Observed range: 9–11g.**

The average describes this small set of readings. It does not mean every meal was exactly 10g, establish acceptable variation for your cat or guarantee future output. A missed dispense belongs in the record as 0g, with a note. Investigate it even if the average looks tidy.

Three daily dispenses averaging 10g would suggest around 30g delivered by that feeder per day. That is arithmetic, **not a recommended daily allowance**. Check the actual daily schedule and keep food served elsewhere within the feeding plan too.

Copy this table into your notes or print it. Write the model, food variety, setting, hopper level and scale's display increment above it. Start a new set when those conditions change.

Record what the display actually shows. Mark a disturbed reading for a repeat rather than guessing what was eaten or spilled.

## What if food stays in the outlet?

For a weighing check, record retained food separately from what reached the bowl. Food arriving with the next dispense can complicate individual readings. If your machine misses meals, repeatedly clogs or dispenses erratically, follow its troubleshooting instructions and contact support. Increasing the setting is not a substitute for finding the fault.

## When should you check the portions again?

Repeat the check after changing food or portion settings, after cleaning and reassembling the dispensing mechanism, or when you notice changed output. Follow the manual's fill limits and note whether results change as the hopper empties.
