An automatic cat feeder should make a particular meal easier to manage. That might be breakfast before you are ready to negotiate with the cat, or a scheduled dry-food portion during the working day. **Start with the food you need it to serve, then check scheduling, portion size, power and cleaning.** An app is optional. Food arriving in the bowl is fairly central to the concept. We’ve used a Nestsplus feeder with Goldfish for roughly two years. That experience has made us particularly interested in backup power and what happens at the outlet. It has not made us experts on every machine with a hopper. ## Which type of feeder do you need? __Choose the mechanism before comparing extra features.__ | Your job | Type to investigate | Main check | | ---------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Scheduled dry-food portions | A hopper that dispenses measured settings. | Compatibility with your actual kibble and what each setting delivers. | | A prepared wet-food meal later | A timed compartment feeder explicitly suitable for wet food. | Food storage instructions, cooling arrangement and timing limits. | | Changing schedules from your phone | An app-connected feeder. | Network requirements and what works without internet access. | | Keeping one cat away from another’s food | A feeder with individual access control. | Whether it controls access, timing, or both. Check the exact model. | A gravity dispenser, which lets food fall as the bowl empties, is a different proposition from a timed feeder. If the point is controlled mealtimes, check that you are buying a timer and dispensing mechanism rather than a large continuously replenished bowl. ## Dry food: check the pieces, not just the hopper For a hopper feeder, take the name of your cat’s food to the product instructions. Look for limits on piece size, shape and food type. “Dry food compatible” should be the start of the check, rather than the end. Capacity in litres tells you how much space is in the container. It does not tell you how long your particular bag will last, how much your cat should eat or how long the food should stay there. We would choose a manageable size over a large capacity we had no use for. Keep the food’s own storage instructions in the decision. If the feeder uses replaceable desiccant packs, check their cost and availability as well as the machine’s price. ## Wet food: cooling needs its own check A timed compartment feeder lets you put food into separate sections before they open or rotate into reach. Choose a model explicitly intended for wet food if that is what you plan to serve. Follow both the feeder instructions and the food packaging for storage and serving. Check how any ice packs are prepared and used. An ice pack is not an assurance that a meal can sit there for any length of time in any room temperature. We would not set a universal safe number of hours from a retailer’s headline. If the instructions do not cover your intended schedule and conditions, clarify that with the manufacturer before relying on it. ## Count feeding times carefully Write out the actual schedule you want first. Three planned portions need three usable time slots; an impressive list of settings is no help if the daily pattern does not fit. With compartment feeders, count meals available *later* as well as total compartments. For example, the [manufacturer’s C500 description](https://closerpets.co.uk/collections/automatic-cat-feeders/products/five-meal-automatic-pet-feeder-with-digital-timer-c500?ref=catstandard.co.uk) explains that one bowl is available immediately and four more are timed. Five compartments therefore does not mean five future openings. Also check how you change a schedule, cancel a meal, serve a portion manually and reset the clock. These are less exciting features than a camera, but they are the ones you will be trying to find when your plans change. ## Portion settings are not a feeding plan A setting labelled “one portion” is a machine setting. It is not automatically one appropriate meal for your cat. Once the feeder arrives, use your normal food and a kitchen scale to check several scheduled dispenses while you are home. Compare the amounts with the feeding plan you already follow. Recheck if you change kibble. If the diet or quantity has been prescribed, follow your vet’s instructions rather than a feeder app’s suggestion. Pay attention to the outlet too. Our Nestsplus sometimes leaves a little food there after dispensing. Goldfish paws it out and considers this an increase in her allowance. In our experience the next feed clears the remainder, but the behaviour matters if you expect every portion to arrive completely at once. ## Battery backup and Wi-Fi failure are different questions Our feeder runs on mains power with battery backup, which has handled several minor outages without issues we noticed. For any prospective purchase, check these separately: - **No mains power:** does the feeder continue scheduled meals on batteries, and which functions stop? - **No internet:** does it retain and run the saved schedule locally? - **No phone:** can you still operate the controls you need? - **Power restored:** what happens to the clock and schedule? - **Low batteries:** how are you told, and where will you see the warning? Use the manual for the exact version. Once set up, follow its guidance to check backup behaviour while you are there to supervise. A feature list is useful; discovering a problem before breakfast depends on it is more useful. ## Two available examples to research **We have not tested either of the following feeders.** They illustrate two different mechanisms, using manufacturer information and matching UK listings checked on 7 September 2026\. They are not a ranked “best” list. ### PETKIT Fresh Element Solo: an app-connected dry-food hopper The Solo has a listed 3-litre capacity, a removable stainless-steel bowl and app control using 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. PETKIT specifies five AAA batteries for backup, purchased separately. Its [official specifications and FAQ](https://www.petkit.com/products/fresh-element-solo?ref=catstandard.co.uk) say a saved feeding schedule continues offline and during battery operation. That makes it an example to investigate if you want scheduled dry-food portions with phone controls. We have not checked its portion accuracy, tested its app or verified its outage behaviour ourselves. The manufacturer lists three AA batteries, supplied separately, and a dishwasher-safe bowl and lid. One meal is accessible immediately and four are scheduled. It is an example to investigate when you want to prepare the portions yourself, including wet food, and use a timer. We have not tested cooling duration, how the mechanism behaves around a determined cat or the cleaning process. Our own Nestsplus model was unavailable, so we have not passed off either example as the same feeder. ## Cleaning, spare parts and the real cost Look for a bowl you can remove, accessible food-contact parts and cleaning instructions you can realistically follow. Check which parts may be washed and which must stay dry. “Easy to clean” is much more useful when the manual shows what comes apart. Before paying, look up replacement bowls, ice packs or other required consumables. Add batteries, recurring desiccant purchases and any optional app subscription you intend to use to your budget. A feeder belongs in the convenience column unless your particular circumstances make it necessary. ## Does a feeder replace a cat sitter? No. [Cats Protection recommends a sitter visiting at least twice daily while you are away](https://www.cats.org.uk/help-and-advice/home-and-environment/going-on-holiday?ref=catstandard.co.uk), with more frequent care where needed. Food dispensing does not check water, clean a tray or notice that a cat is unwell. A feeder can form part of a care routine. It is not the entire routine with a plug on it. ## Our before-you-buy checklist 1. Identify the meal you need help with and the food it uses. 2. Check the exact model’s food compatibility and usable time slots. 3. Read what happens during power and internet failures. 4. Check the cleaning steps and replacement-part availability. 5. Compare the delivered price and ongoing costs. 6. Allow time to introduce it and observe several scheduled meals at home.
