- Description: What still needs checking, emptying and washing when the litter box does the scooping for you.

A self-cleaning litter box removes clumps from the litter bed. It does not remove the waste bag, wash the chamber, inspect the sensors or notice that something unpleasant has begun living under the sifter. The machine automates scooping; ownership remains stubbornly analogue.

## The short answer

Check the litter, entrance, waste drawer and device status every day. Empty the drawer before it is packed or smells, regardless of its advertised maximum. Spot-clean residue promptly and deep-clean the removable washable parts roughly monthly as a starting routine, sooner for several cats, loose stools, hot weather or persistent odour. Always use the model's emptying or maintenance mode, unplug before dismantling, keep the electrical base dry and reassemble only when every washed part is completely dry.

__A practical starting routine. Shorten it according to the cat, household and exact manual.__
| When | What to do | What you are looking for |
| -------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Every day | Inspect the cat, litter bed, entrance, waste drawer and app or control-panel status. Remove visible residue and top up compatible litter below the fill line. | Missed cycles, smearing, loose stool, low litter, unusual visits, a loose bag, blocked sensors or a cat avoiding the box. |
| When needed | Seal and replace the waste bag before it is compressed or odorous. Wipe accessible approved surfaces with the machine paused and unplugged where the manual says so. | Heat, humidity and several cats can make a nominal capacity irrelevant. |
| About monthly | Empty the litter using the machine's documented function, unplug it and wash only removable washable parts. Clean sooner when residue or odour persists. | Build-up around the liner, sifter, waste route, bin and seals; wear or incorrect reassembly. |
| After cleaning | Dry fully, refit every part, add the correct litter, level or calibrate if required and observe a complete empty cycle. | A damp chamber makes litter stick; a misplaced sifter, liner, bag or basket can cause faults. |

| [Neakasa M1 Plus](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CSKBWBF6?tag=catstandard-21&ref=catstandard.co.uk) | Neakasa suggests emptying around every 7–10 days for one cat, sooner in heat or when odour appears. | Use Empty while powered; then unplug. The removable litter chamber and waste bin can be washed and air-dried upright. | Do not rinse or submerge the main electrical unit. Wipe it and follow the manual for sensor areas. |
| [PETKIT PURA MAX 2](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DCBLXNGB?tag=catstandard-21&ref=catstandard.co.uk) | PETKIT advertises up to 15 days for one cat in its 7L bin, with shorter intervals in hot or humid conditions. | Remove and rinse the cylinder and litter sifter as the P9902 manual directs. Wipe the litter pad gently with a wet cloth; do not scrub its coating. | Wipe the base as needed; do not rinse it. Refit components only when completely dry. |
| [PETLIBRO Luma](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0FPX3GGN7?tag=catstandard-21&ref=catstandard.co.uk) | Petlibro advertises up to seven days of waste for two cats in the 11L drawer. | The litter basket is removable and can be rinsed; use Petlibro's current removal and cleaning instructions. | Keep the powered main body and sensor system dry; seat the fully dry basket correctly before use. |

Those intervals describe storage under particular conditions. They are not promises that the bin will remain hygienic or that the cat's output will be normal. Look every day and empty sooner.

## How to deep-clean safely

1. **Provide another tray.** Drying takes time, and the cat should not have to negotiate with a dismantled appliance.
2. **Read the exact manual.** Identify the emptying or maintenance mode and which parts are washable before adding water to the situation.
3. **Make room in the waste drawer.** The old litter needs somewhere to go. Empty and reline the drawer first if necessary.
4. **Run the documented emptying cycle.** Keep hands and the cat away while the unit moves. Wait until it has stopped.
5. **Switch off and unplug.** Remove only the parts the manual describes. Do not force a latch or dismantle the motor, gears or electronics.
6. **Wash removable parts.** Use water and only a cleaner permitted by the maker. Avoid sharp tools that can damage liners or coatings.
7. **Wipe the base and sensors correctly.** A slightly damp or dry soft cloth is not the same as a hose. Keep liquid out of openings.
8. **Dry everything fully.** Refit the liner, filter, basket, chamber and bag exactly. Add [compatible litter](https://www.catstandard.co.uk/litter-for-self-cleaning-litter-boxes/) without exceeding the fill line.
9. **Calibrate and watch one cycle.** Check the machine is level, empty and unobstructed before giving it the night shift.

## Why bin capacity is not a schedule

“Up to 15 days” is a maximum under the maker's assumptions. One large cat, two small cats, warm weather, soft stools or a bag fitted badly can shorten it sharply. Waiting for a drawer to become geometrically full can compact waste against the door, obstruct a sensor and make the eventual bag change memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Daily inspection also preserves something automation can hide: what the cat actually passed. Look for diarrhoea, blood, unusually small clumps, repeated visits or a sudden absence of waste. The app may help establish a pattern, but it does not replace looking.

## If it still smells

- Replace the bag and clean the drawer rather than adding fragrance.
- Look for residue on the litter liner, sifter, transfer opening and around the bin seal.
- Check that washed parts were fully dry before fresh litter was added.
- Confirm the litter forms firm clumps and the cleaning delay is long enough.
- Clean tracked litter and any accident around the machine.
- Investigate persistent soft stool or a change in toileting with a vet rather than treating the machine as an air freshener.

## Maintenance before buying

The easiest machine to live with is one whose chamber can be removed, carried to the wash area and dried without blocking the cat's only toilet. The [Neakasa M1 Plus](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CSKBWBF6?tag=catstandard-21&ref=catstandard.co.uk) has an open chamber and an explicit monthly routine. The [PETKIT PURA MAX 2](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DCBLXNGB?tag=catstandard-21&ref=catstandard.co.uk) breaks its cylinder into several washable components. The [PETLIBRO Luma](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0FPX3GGN7?tag=catstandard-21&ref=catstandard.co.uk) uses a two-step removable basket but has the largest outer body in our comparison.

Compare the full machines in our [UK buying guide](https://www.catstandard.co.uk/best-self-cleaning-litter-boxes-uk/) and include bags, litter and replacement parts in the [running-cost calculation](https://www.catstandard.co.uk/self-cleaning-litter-box-running-costs/).

The [printable maintenance checklist](https://www.catstandard.co.uk/automatic-litter-box-planner/) gives you a place to record the exact model interval beside this general routine.

We have not cleaned these machines ourselves. Capacity claims belong to the manufacturers and are presented as limits rather than recommended intervals. Follow the exact current manual before using water or removing parts. Read [our editorial standards](https://www.catstandard.co.uk/our-standards/) or browse [Litter & trays](https://www.catstandard.co.uk/topics/litter/). PETKIT cleaning permissions were corrected on 24 October 2026 against the exact P9902 manual, pages 18–23: rinse the cylinder and sifter, wipe the litter pad and keep the base out of water. Other source and capacity dates remain unchanged.
