# How to waste less cat food: buying, storage and serving

A multipack is only good value if it becomes meals. Buying several months of something your cat has recently decided is beneath her is quite an expensive way to acquire a cardboard box.

## The short answer

**Buy pack sizes you can use as directed, protect food between meals and keep the cat's feeding needs unchanged.** Start with the [waste check](#waste-check), compare [pack sizes](#pack-size) and keep [unserved wet food](#wet-food) separate from bowl leftovers. ## Find out where the food is being wasted

If your cat suddenly eats less or stops eating, call your vet rather than treating it as a budgeting problem. [Cats Protection advises contacting a vet when eating or drinking habits suddenly change](https://www.cats.org.uk/help-and-advice/diet/feeding?ref=catstandard.co.uk).

For an otherwise unchanged routine, make a brief note whenever food gets discarded. Separate unopened stock, food remaining in an opened pack and food already served. They point to different practical problems.

A simple household waste check, not a feeding assessment.

You do not need a spreadsheet unless you were hoping for an excuse. A note on your phone is enough to spot an order that keeps arriving before the previous one has been opened.

## Choose a pack size before chasing the lowest unit price

Look for the same food in a quantity that fits your established routine. A bigger bag may cost less per kilogram, but that saving is less useful if part of it is thrown away.

For a simple stock estimate, divide the pack's weight by the amount of that food already planned for each day. Compare the resulting number of days with the manufacturer's directions after opening. This estimates how long a pack will last; it does not calculate how much your cat should eat.

Keep any prescribed feeding plan in place. Do not reduce the daily allowance or switch a needed diet merely to finish a pack neatly.

Put the packs that need using first where you can see them, while respecting their dates and storage requirements. Check the cupboard before increasing a repeat order. The discount does not know what is already in there.

## Keep dry food in its original bag

The [US Food and Drug Administration recommends keeping pet food in its original packaging](https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/animal-health-literacy/proper-storage-pet-food-treats?ref=catstandard.co.uk). That retains the product details, lot number and date if a problem or recall needs checking. If you use an outer storage tub, put the bag inside it.

Close the bag securely and keep it somewhere cool, dry and inaccessible to the cat. Wash and fully dry the storage tub between bags; do not keep topping a layer of old crumbs with new food. A container you already own may do the job if it is suitable, clean, dry and secure.

Write the opening date somewhere obvious and follow the instructions for your particular food. ## Separate unserved wet food from bowl leftovers

**Food still in the pack and food your cat has been eating are different things.** Use a clean utensil to serve the meal, then cover and promptly refrigerate any unserved remainder according to its label. The [FDA's pet-food handling guidance](https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/animal-health-literacy/tips-safe-handling-pet-food-and-treats?ref=catstandard.co.uk) calls for prompt refrigeration or disposal of unused canned and pouched food, and washing bowls and utensils after use.

Note when you opened the pack. Follow its stated storage temperature and use-after-opening instructions; if those are unclear, ask the manufacturer. A general article cannot give one safe number of hours for every food, room and serving arrangement.

## Review serving without cutting the food your cat needs

Keep track of what is offered across the whole day, especially when more than one person feeds the cat. Two people each thinking nobody has done breakfast is a fairly effective subscription service.

Check that the bowl is clean and your cat can eat without competition. Keep the established feeding plan in view when reviewing how food is offered; persistent leftovers do not by themselves establish what your cat needs.

That is a measurement task, separate from deciding the daily allowance. Avoid changing several things at once: it makes the result harder to understand.

## Know when saving food is the wrong objective

Discard spoiled food. Do not buy damaged packs or use leaking or swollen ones; [the FDA identifies swelling, leaks and foul odours as signs of a product problem](https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/animal-health-literacy/proper-storage-pet-food-treats?ref=catstandard.co.uk). Keep the packaging details if you need to contact the manufacturer, and speak to your vet if your cat becomes unwell.

Do not use surplus human meals as a substitute for cat food. Reducing household waste is worthwhile; the cat is not a disposal route.

It is a local, membership-based service for people, and the operator asks members not to collect its food to feed pets. Human-food sharing should stay separate from your cat’s meals.
