- Description: A safe order for fixing cycle, sensor, waste-bin, litter and cat-refusal problems without guessing at the mechanism.

## The short answer

**Turn automatic mode off if the unit moves unexpectedly, fails to stop or could trap or frighten the cat. Provide an ordinary tray.**

Put the machine on the hard, level floor and at the wall clearance required by its manual; remove anything touching or tucked under the base. Check litter level and compatibility, flatten the waste bag, clear only accessible debris and reseat removable parts. Use the maker's named calibration or reset step once. Stop and contact support if the fault persists or requires opening powered components.

When an automatic litter box stops being automatic, resist the understandable urge to turn it off and on until it develops respect. First remove the cat from the equation, disable automatic movement and work through the floor, clearance, litter, bag and removable parts in that order.

## Do these checks first

1. **Protect the cat.** Disable automatic cycling and provide a clean ordinary tray. Do not test movement with a cat inside or nearby.
2. **Read the actual alert.** Record the wording, light pattern, time and what the unit was doing. Photograph the setup before changing it.
3. **Check the floor and clearance.** Weight sensors can misread on carpet, a mat, an uneven floor or when furniture, cable or curtain touches the body.
4. **Check the consumables.** Keep compatible litter inside the fill range; make the bag flat and correctly seated; empty a packed drawer.
5. **Reseat removable parts.** With the unit stopped and unplugged where instructed, confirm the chamber, basket, liner and sifter are dry and correctly fitted.
6. **Use one documented reset.** Level, calibrate or resume exactly as the maker directs. Repeated resets can conceal an intermittent safety fault without fixing it.

| Symptom | Likely first checks | Action | Stop when |
| ------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| Will not cycle | Cat or object detected; soft floor; wall contact; part not seated; full drawer; power or current alert. | Clear the area, restore required placement, reseat approved parts and use the documented resume command. | It remains stuck, grinds, tilts, smells hot or cycles unpredictably. |
| False weight or cat detection | Carpet, mat edge, cord, furniture or moving curtain touching the base; litter added without calibration. | Use a hard level floor, restore clearance and run the exact model's level/calibration step. | The reading remains wrong on a clear compliant floor. |
| Waste bin says full too early | Bag blocking an infrared sensor, bag bunched at the base, debris at the door, waste compacted. | Empty it, fit the correct bag smoothly and clean only accessible sensors as the manual permits. | The door or sensor appears damaged, or the alert returns immediately. |
| Clumps remain or litter returns dirty | Incompatible grain, weak or slow clump, cleaning delay too short, litter outside fill range, wrong sifter. | Use the [exact compatible litter and filter](https://www.catstandard.co.uk/litter-for-self-cleaning-litter-boxes/); correct the level and delay. | Waste smears repeatedly despite compatible litter and normal stool. |
| New leaking or severe smell | Damaged or misplaced liner, residue under removable parts, full bin, damp parts, inappropriate litter. | Turn off, empty and inspect only the user-removable parts; clean and dry them fully. | A liner, seal or powered component is damaged, or liquid has reached the base. |
| App offline but unit otherwise normal | Wi-Fi, firmware, service status or changed network. | Check the maker's service page, app and firmware; preserve a safe local/manual mode. | Loss of connection also changes physical cycling or safety behaviour. |

| [Neakasa M1 Plus](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0CSKBWBF6?tag=catstandard-21&ref=catstandard.co.uk) | Firm, level floor without contact against nearby objects; at least 70cm vertical placement space. Keep the machine itself off a mat or carpet. | Follow the supplied manual’s fill scale; the current Plus FAQ recommends 60–90%. A loose bag can block the infrared sensor. The Plus FAQ excludes tofu and tofu-containing mixed litter. | Use litter calibration after a change; Empty then re-pour to smooth, or use the documented long Level press. Set more than five minutes for clumping where needed. |
| [PETKIT PURA MAX 2](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0DCBLXNGB?tag=catstandard-21&ref=catstandard.co.uk) | Hard, flat floor without wall contact, no carpet and no entrance obstruction, as the exact P9902 manual requires. | Fit the correct supplied sifter and fast-clumping litter no longer than 12mm; incorrectly sized or thick bags can affect the drawer. | Use the control panel or app status and maintenance functions described in the current manual; reassemble the dry cylinder parts exactly. |
| [PETLIBRO Luma](https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0FPX3GGN7?tag=catstandard-21&ref=catstandard.co.uk) | Hard flat floor, 10cm from walls; no mat, cord or object beneath or touching the four raised weight sensors. | Seat the litter basket fully. For a false full-bin alert, flatten the bag and clear hair or debris around the accessible door and infrared sensor. | After correcting placement, Petlibro documents a quick double press of Clean to resume. Update firmware before diagnosing a persistent false full-bin alert. |

Use the manufacturer's evidence link in the source note for instructions; the product names above are purchase routes. Our [safety guide](https://www.catstandard.co.uk/self-cleaning-litter-box-safety/) lists the age, weight and automatic-mode limits that troubleshooting cannot override.

## When the machine works but the cat refuses

Turn automatic mode off, restore the old tray and use the gradual steps in our [transition guide](https://www.catstandard.co.uk/how-to-introduce-cat-to-self-cleaning-litter-box/). Check whether the new entrance is harder to use, the interior is smaller, the litter feels different, the cycle startled the cat or another cat controls access.

Do not punish accidents or force the cat into the unit. A clean mechanical bill of health does not mean the toilet suits that particular cat.

## When to stop troubleshooting

Stop automatic use and contact the manufacturer when the unit moves with a cat inside, fails to stop, tilts, grinds, exposes a pinch point, has damaged wiring, smells hot, receives liquid in its base or repeats an error after the documented setup checks. Do not bypass a sensor, wedge a door open or open the electrical housing.

Contact a vet when the cat strains, cries, passes blood or tiny amounts, makes repeated visits, suddenly toilets elsewhere or cannot urinate. Cats Protection describes inability to pass urine as an emergency. Give the cat an ordinary accessible tray while you seek help.

## Repair or replace?

Use warranty or manufacturer support before buying another expensive machine. Record the serial number, purchase date, firmware, alert, photographs of the compliant placement and a short video taken without the cat nearby. Ask whether the failed part is user-replaceable and whether opening the unit would affect the warranty.

If the unit cannot be restored safely, compare current choices in our [self-cleaning litter-box guide](https://www.catstandard.co.uk/best-self-cleaning-litter-boxes-uk/). A replacement should solve the cause of the first failure, not merely arrive in a different colour.
