Wanda, an 11-year-old cat with a terminal diagnosis, has left shelter care for a home in Oklahoma where breakfast is now a matter of considerable urgency.

Best Friends Animal Society reported on 22 September that Wanda had arrived at its Pet Resource Center in Bentonville, Arkansas, from a Missouri shelter. She was briefly adopted, then returned after becoming ill.

The organisation’s veterinary team initially suspected feline infectious peritonitis and treated her. Wanda improved, but staff later found and removed a mammary tumour. Best Friends said a complete cure was unlikely and that further treatment would cause her considerable stress, so the team looked for someone able to give her a comfortable home for the time she had left.

Cynthia had driven from Oklahoma to visit family in Bentonville. She had recently lost her cat Onyx and was hoping to adopt another senior cat. Wanda purred and nuzzled her hand when they met; learning about the diagnosis did not change Cynthia’s decision.

Wanda has since settled in with Cynthia’s four other cats. She announces breakfast at sunrise, greets Cynthia after work and returns to her lap once the important food administration has concluded.

The difficult part of Wanda’s story has not vanished. The useful part is that it no longer has to be spent waiting in a shelter.
