Do automatic cat feeders work without power or Wi-Fi?

Power, saved schedules and app access are different questions. Check what a feeder actually keeps doing when one of them stops.

The internet can stop working without breakfast needing to stop working. Whether your feeder agrees is something to establish before Goldfish opens negotiations.

A power cut and a Wi-Fi failure are different problems

Think about three jobs: supplying power, storing and running the feeding schedule, and communicating with your phone. One can fail while another continues.

A mains outage may also turn off the router. Battery backup in the feeder does not power the household network. Equally, an “offline” message in an app does not by itself tell you whether food has reached the bowl.

Those are reasons to inspect what the feeder actually does, rather than treat an app status as the entire story. A notification is useful. It is not a small person standing in the kitchen.

What the manufacturers actually say

These are documentation examples, checked on 8 September 2026, rather than comparative reliability tests. Match the model on your unit or listing to the instructions: a shared brand name or similar casing is not enough.

PETKIT's Solo specifications and FAQ list 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and backup batteries sold separately. The offline statement describes an already-set schedule; it is not a promise that initial setup can be completed without a connection.

Catit specifies an average of approximately 58 hours with four C/LR14 batteries for the PIXI Smart Feeder. That is a manufacturer figure, not a duration we measured or a guarantee for every battery and feeding pattern. Its page also describes a physical instant-feed button that can be disabled through the app, so check the setting before relying on the button as your fallback.

The Catit product page we checked does not settle the separate Wi-Fi-only question. Use its model support resources or ask the manufacturer for the answer rather than extending the battery claim to cover it.

Check the backup while you are home

This is our practical checklist for applying the manual, not a universal test sequence for every feeder. Have the normal meal available so a failed check does not become a missed feed.

  1. Identify the exact model and save its instructions. Note the firmware version if it is available. Read the battery type, fitting instructions, low-battery indication and backup limitations.
  2. Confirm ordinary scheduled dispensing first. Use your normal compatible food. Record the time and what reaches the bowl, not just the event shown in the app.
  3. Fit the specified backup batteries. Follow the manual's guidance on type and replacement. A battery compartment with nothing in it is mostly a design feature.
  4. Check mains-loss behaviour only as the manufacturer permits. For a unit designed to switch to batteries when its normal supply is disconnected, observe a planned dispense on backup while present. Restore the normal supply afterwards. Do not open electrical components or switch off household circuits.
  5. Check network loss separately if the manual provides a suitable method. Turning off Wi-Fi on your phone only disconnects the phone; it does not disconnect the feeder. Avoid disrupting other household equipment to run a test. Ask support if there is no clear method.
  6. Check recovery. Confirm the clock, saved meals and next scheduled feed after the connection or power returns. Check what the instructions say about missed meals before issuing an extra manual portion.

Count any food dispensed during the check within the feeding plan you already use. The purpose is to understand the machine, not accidentally organise a second lunch.

A useful note has four lines: the interruption you checked, the meal you expected, what reached the bowl, and what happened after recovery. Keep the circumstances with the result. One successful short check does not establish battery endurance through a prolonged outage.

Questions worth asking before you buy

  • Is the schedule stored on the feeder, and which functions need the internet or cloud service?
  • Are backup batteries included, and do they run the dispenser or only preserve settings?
  • Can you serve food using a physical control if the app is unavailable?
  • How does the low-battery warning appear, including while offline?
  • What happens to the clock and missed meals when power returns?
  • Does the answer apply to this exact model and current software?

If a feature matters to your household and the documentation does not answer the question, clarify it before relying on the purchase. “Smart” is a category, not an answer to any of these.

What happened with Goldfish's feeder

Our Nestsplus runs on mains power with batteries as backup. Over roughly two years of use, that backup has handled several minor outages without an issue we noticed. We have not run a timed battery-endurance check, so there is no long-outage figure to report.

The Nestsplus owner review covers that experience and the small amount of food that can remain at the outlet. Goldfish regards retrieving it as an achievement. The machine regards it as food that was already hers.

That experience applies to our unit. It does not verify a different feeder's offline behaviour, even if the listing photograph looks familiar.

Backup power does not replace a care plan

Cats Protection recommends visits at least twice a day when arranging a sitter while you are away, with care adapted to your cat's needs. A feeder does not check water, clean the tray or notice illness.

Make sure the person looking after your cat knows how to provide the usual food if the machine stops working. The most useful backup sometimes has a key.
