Who is responsible
Kieran Simpson operates The Cat Standard and is the controller of personal information used to run the publication. For privacy questions or requests, email hello@britishuplift.co.uk. This inbox is shared with our sister publication, The British Uplift; please include The Cat Standard in the subject. You can also use our contact page.
When you visit
The site uses Ghost software hosted on Railway. Delivering pages and investigating faults involves technical information such as your IP address, request time, requested URL, browser information and response status. Our lawful basis for this processing is legitimate interests: operating a reliable website, preventing abuse and resolving technical problems.
Fonts are served from this website. Reading a page does not require a separate request to Google Fonts. Newsletter and member registration are currently disabled.
Analytics and cookies
We use Plausible to understand aggregate visits, referral sources, popular pages and clicks on affiliate links. Our affiliate-click event does not send your name or email address. Plausible does not use analytics cookies or persistent visitor identifiers. Its service processes IP and browser information to count visits, but says it does not store raw IP addresses and deletes the salt used for its daily identifier every 24 hours. Aggregate statistics do not give us a record of an identified person's browsing history.
Plausible states that its visitor data is processed and stored in the EU. Read its data policy. We do not use advertising trackers on these pages. Administrative sign-in can use essential security/session cookies; this is separate from ordinary reading. The current public site does not offer newsletter signup or personalised advertising.
When you email us
We receive your email address, name if supplied, message, attachments and associated email details. The shared inbox uses Microsoft's email service. We use correspondence to answer enquiries, investigate corrections, consider suggestions, manage business discussions and deal with privacy requests. Sending a message is optional; without relevant contact details we may be unable to reply.
Our lawful basis for ordinary enquiries and editorial correspondence is legitimate interests in responding and maintaining an accurate publication. Where you ask us to take steps towards a contract with you, or we need information to perform that contract, we rely on contract. Where a law requires us to handle a request or keep a record, we rely on legal obligation. We do not add people who email us to a marketing list.
How long information is kept
We keep correspondence while it is needed to resolve the matter and any related follow-up. The criteria for retaining it longer are whether a correction still needs an evidence trail, a business relationship remains active, or a complaint, dispute or legal record-keeping requirement remains relevant. Unnecessary personal details should not be retained simply because the rest of a record is useful. Contact us if you want us to review information we hold about you.
Ghost's local log configuration rotates files daily and retains ten rotated files alongside the current file. This is a rotation limit, not a promise that every copy of a request is erased after ten days. Railway separately handles infrastructure records under its privacy policy and plan-based log retention arrangements. A relevant extract may be retained while a fault, security incident or dispute is investigated. Aggregate Plausible statistics are kept to compare the publication's performance over time.
Service providers and overseas processing
Hosting, email and analytics providers process the information needed to supply their services. Relevant information may also be provided to professional advisers or authorities where necessary to deal with a legal obligation or claim. We do not sell your contact information.
Some hosting or email processing may take place outside the UK. Railway's data processing terms describe its transfer safeguards, including the UK Addendum to standard contractual clauses where applicable. Microsoft's data protection terms cover its business services. Contact us for information about the safeguards relevant to your enquiry.
Links to retailers and other websites
An external link takes you to a service with its own privacy practices. Affiliate links identify this publication to a retailer or network so a qualifying purchase can be attributed to us. The destination may use cookies or other tracking under its own policies. You do not have to follow a buying link to read our articles. We identify affiliate content in the relevant article; see our editorial standards.
Your rights and complaints
Depending on the circumstances, you can ask for access to your personal information, correction, erasure, restriction of processing or a portable copy. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests. Where processing relies on consent, you can withdraw it without affecting the lawfulness of earlier processing. These rights have conditions and exceptions; we will explain any that apply to a request. We do not use your information to make solely automated decisions with legal or similarly significant effects.
Email the address above to exercise your rights or complain about how we handle your information. We may need enough information to verify your identity and locate the relevant records. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, the UK's data protection regulator.
Changes to this notice
We will update this notice when our services or information handling change. The date above shows its latest revision.
