How to choose a cat water fountain: cleaning, filters and costs

Neither selection is based on a promise that your cat will drink a particular amount. Cats Protection advises keeping clean, fresh water available at all times. Our buying priority is equipment that makes that routine manageable.

Start with the parts you will have to clean

Before looking at colours, open the instructions. Can you remove the drinking surface, lift out the reservoir and reach the pump's intake? Are there narrow channels that need a brush? Where does the cable detach? Those are more useful buying questions than whether the product photo suggests a very serene kitchen.

A replaceable filter does not wash the fountain for you. Budget time for the reservoir, drinking surface and pump, following the exact model's instructions. “Dishwasher-safe” needs to name the component: it is not permission to put the whole appliance in.

If you already find a plain bowl's upkeep inconvenient, adding a pump and filter is unlikely to simplify things. A fountain makes more sense when its drinking arrangement is something you want to offer and its cleaning routine is one you will keep.

Catit PIXI: a choice of water flow in one fountain

The useful feature of the standard PIXI is the removable spout. You can offer an arcing stream or take it off for a bubbling flow. Catit also specifies a low-water light and automatic shut-off when empty. Those are reminders and protection features; checking the water is still your job.

The manufacturer's PIXI product page distinguishes the standard plastic cover from the stainless steel version. The white Amazon listing linked here is the standard model, not the Smart or steel-top option. Check that distinction if dishwasher suitability is central to your decision.

Cat Mate: three drinking levels and washable bowls

The Cat Mate offers three levels in an open, two-litre design. Its practical appeal is the drinking layout and the ability to put the bowls in the dishwasher. The pump is a separate cleaning job.

Closer Pets specifies a low-voltage supply with a three-metre lead, which is useful to know before choosing a position. Its care advice calls for monthly pump cleaning and monthly filter replacement for one pet, with more frequent filter changes for multiple pets. Check the supplied instructions for the complete routine.

There is also an identifiable manufacturer replacement pump compatible with this fountain. That makes replacing a failed component a possibility rather than immediately shopping for a whole new unit. Check the model and connector before ordering a spare.

What does a cat fountain cost to keep running?

Compare three things: the fountain, its consumables and electricity. A lower purchase price can be less compelling once a year's filters enter the conversation.

• Filters: divide the pack price by the number of cartridges, then multiply by the number needed over a year. The PIXI manual specifies replacement every three to four weeks, or sooner when needed; its filter product page says 30 days. Follow the instructions supplied with your equipment and allow roughly 13–18 cartridges annually at the manual’s interval. Cat Mate’s guidance says monthly for one pet, with more frequent changes where needed.
• Electricity: for continuous operation, annual kWh = watts × 24 × 365 ÷ 1,000. Multiply that by your electricity unit rate. Use the fountain's operating consumption, if specified, rather than assuming the adapter's maximum output is its actual draw.
• Replacement parts: check pump availability and exact filter compatibility before buying. Similar-looking cartridges are not enough to establish a match.

We have left live prices with the retailers rather than turn today's offer into a permanent promise. Compare filter cost per cartridge, not just the cheapest-looking pack.

On waste, a replaceable pump is a useful buying consideration. Disposable filters still create an ongoing stream of consumables. Keeping a bowl that already works is a reasonable choice too.

Before making the fountain the new routine

• Keep the familiar bowl available. Introduce the fountain as another option and observe how your cat approaches it. Purchasing a preference on her behalf is ambitious.
• Plan the socket and cable route. Choose a stable position, follow the electrical instructions and keep the lead out of walkways.
• Check water every day. Reservoir capacity is not a number of days you can ignore it. Refresh and clean according to the instructions and what you find.
• Practise dismantling it. Unplug first, follow the manual, then confirm normal flow after reassembly.
• Listen in its intended room. Manufacturer “quiet” claims do not tell you how noticeable the pump or water will be beside your sofa.
