How to choose a cat water fountain: cleaning, filters and costs

Which cat water fountain should you choose?

Start with PIXI for flow choice and refill reminders; choose Cat Mate when washable bowls matter more. The selected white fountains and both genuine filter packs were in stock, sold and dispatched by Amazon on 6 October 2026. The table uses one-time pack prices, excluding delivery, subscriptions and any extra discounts.

Cats Protection advises keeping clean, fresh water available at all times. These picks compare documented features, upkeep and consumables; a fountain does not promise a particular drinking amount or medical benefit.

Start with the parts you will have to clean

Read the cleaning instructions before buying. Can you remove the drinking surface, reach the pump’s intake and clean narrow channels? Check where the cable detaches, too.

Plan to wash the reservoir, drinking surface and pump as the manual directs. Put only the named dishwasher-safe components in the dishwasher.

Choose a fountain when you want to offer moving water and can keep up with its cleaning. If washing a plain bowl is already a chore, adding a pump and filter is unlikely to help.

Catit PIXI: flow choice and refill alerts

The removable spout gives the standard PIXI its choice of an arcing stream or bubbling flow. Catit also specifies a low-water light and automatic shut-off when empty. Keep checking the water yourself.

The manufacturer's PIXI product page distinguishes the standard plastic cover from the stainless steel version. The white Amazon listing linked here is the standard model, not the Smart or steel-top option. Check that distinction if dishwasher suitability is central to your decision.

Use Catit’s PIXI support page for assembly. Its standard PIXI pump specification identifies replacement 44833, available to order for £16 from the UK store at our check. It excludes the USB adapter and does not fit the Smart fountain. Clean the existing pump first; a spare is a repair option, not a scheduled annual purchase.

Cat Mate: three drinking levels and washable bowls

The Cat Mate offers three levels in an open, two-litre design. Its practical appeal is the drinking layout and the ability to put the bowls in the dishwasher. The pump is a separate cleaning job.

Closer Pets specifies a low-voltage supply with a three-metre lead, which is useful to know before choosing a position. Its care advice calls for monthly pump cleaning and monthly filter replacement for one pet, with more frequent filter changes for multiple pets. Check the supplied instructions for the complete routine.

Closer Pets identifies replacement pump 354 for the Cat Mate 335. It was available to order for £13 at the 6 October UK-store check, before delivery. Match the fountain reference and connector before ordering; a pump sold for PIXI is not interchangeable.

What does a cat fountain cost to keep running?

Our filter replacement guide matches the genuine PIXI six-pack 43722 and Cat Mate four-pack 386 to their fountains. Use the named pack sizes for the figures above.

Compare three things: the fountain, its consumables and electricity. A lower purchase price can be less compelling once a year's filters enter the conversation.

• Filters: divide the pack price by the number of cartridges, then multiply by the number needed over a year. The PIXI manual specifies replacement every three to four weeks, or sooner when needed; its filter product page says 30 days. Follow the instructions supplied with your equipment and allow roughly 13–18 cartridges annually at the manual’s interval. Cat Mate’s guidance says monthly for one pet, with more frequent changes where needed.
• Electricity: for continuous operation, annual kWh = watts × 24 × 365 ÷ 1,000. Multiply that by your electricity unit rate. Use the fountain's operating consumption, if specified, rather than assuming the adapter's maximum output is its actual draw.
• Replacement parts: check pump availability and exact filter compatibility before buying. Similar-looking cartridges are not enough to establish a match.

Allow £19.47 for three PIXI six-packs, or £38.97 for three Cat Mate four-packs, at the checked prices. The PIXI consumption estimate uses the unrounded £6.49 ÷ 6 unit cost; £14.06–£19.47 covers 13–18 cartridges. These are replacement-only annual planning allowances, not first-year bills: they ignore any starter filters, delivery, electricity and an occasional pump repair. Earlier changes add cost; leftover cartridges carry into the next period.

A replaceable pump can help keep the fountain in use, though filters remain disposable. If a bowl already works for your cat, keeping it is reasonable.

Before making the fountain the new routine

• Keep the familiar bowl available. Introduce the fountain as another option and observe how your cat approaches it. Purchasing a preference on her behalf is ambitious.
• Plan the socket and cable route. Choose a stable position, follow the electrical instructions and keep the lead out of walkways.
• Check water every day. Reservoir capacity is not a number of days you can ignore it. Refresh and clean according to the instructions and what you find.
• Practise dismantling it. Unplug first, follow the manual, then confirm normal flow after reassembly.
• Listen in its intended room. Manufacturer “quiet” claims do not tell you how noticeable the pump or water will be beside your sofa.
