Meeko the rescue kitten settles in with Elmo in Edinburgh

After care from Cats Protection’s Glasgow volunteers, Meeko has found a home alongside an older deaf cat called Elmo.

Meeko has settled into an Edinburgh home with Elmo, an older deaf cat, after being fostered by Cats Protection’s Glasgow volunteers. She was rehomed in August; the charity published her story in October.

Previously called Sugar, she was six weeks old and weighed just 400g when a veterinary practice asked the Glasgow team for help. She had cat flu, sores and crusty eyes, and was frightened by ordinary sounds and touch. Unfamiliar experiences could make her close her eyes and freeze.

Kirsty Ayre, the team’s welfare lead, describes carrying the kitten close to her body in a hoodie worn backwards because it comforted her. Recovery involved giving her time and emotional care, as well as addressing her poor physical condition.

The team then matched her with a family who understood her experiences. Her adopter, Jo Griggs, had expected a very frightened kitten but reports that Meeko has become brave, trusting and affectionate.

The household already had an enclosed outdoor catio for Elmo. Meeko now uses the cat flap, plays in that space and follows him around the house. Jo says she has settled in extremely well.
