Oklahoma shelters find room and care for nearly 100 cats

Local shelters and a Best Friends emergency grant helped cats left behind after their owner died.

Nearly 100 cats in Oklahoma received shelter and care after their owner died, Best Friends Animal Society reported on 21 September.

A nearby shelter could not take them all. An emergency grant from Best Friends, alongside help from Pauls Valley Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and other local organisations, meant the response could be shared.

PAWS supervisor Christopher Hurley said his team collected 41 cats in one day. Each was examined by a vet, given medication, vaccinated and microchipped before the day ended.

The collaboration grew from a programme connecting Oklahoma shelters through local coordinators. For the cats, those working relationships meant somewhere safe to go when one shelter lacked room.
