Neutering grant helps cats and dogs at two Virginia shelters

A grant supporting hundreds of neutering surgeries forms part of a practical effort to help shelter cats and dogs find homes.

Hundreds of cats and dogs have benefited from funded neutering at two Virginia shelters, according to a Best Friends Animal Society report published on 9 October.

A $35,000 grant to the William A. Harrison Jr. Foundation supported work with Henrico County Animal Shelter and Petersburg Animal Care & Control. The foundation also helps promote adoptable animals, runs adoption events and supplies food for a pet pantry.

Best Friends reports that both shelters maintained a save rate of at least 90% over the past year. That figure includes animals leaving alive and those still in care awaiting an outcome; it is not an adoption rate.

Adoptions at Henrico nearly doubled over the past 12 months, the foundation reports. These are shelter-wide results, rather than separate figures for cats. Practical help with the bill, the food cupboard and finding a home: fairly unglamorous work with a rather good result.
