Best cat carriers in the UK: our picks for vet trips

Our practical starting pick for everyday vet trips, plus a wider-access alternative and the checks that decide the fit.

A carrier has a fairly modest job description: contain the cat, let her breathe and arrive with the same number of cats you left with. Access and cleaning matter more than whether it looks particularly outdoorsy.

Two carriers, two useful reasons to choose

Exact carrier variants for ordinary UK vet trips; manufacturer-stated outside dimensions, checked 6 October 2026

Ferplast Atlas 20 Open, blackOur everyday starting pick: front door, opening roof grid and detachable upper shell. Bowl and washable cotton cushion included.58 L × 37 W × 32 H cm; up to 8kg. Model 73016099W1.Rigid storage footprint; confirm inside space and door clearance for your cat.
Catit Cabrio, Blue GreyWider access: the roof opens to both sides, with a transparent front door and slide-out bowls.51 L × 33 W × 35 H cm; maker's weight ceiling 11.3kg. Model 41372.More involved assembly and closures; practise fastening it before loading. Amazon had marketplace offers rather than a featured offer when checked.

The higher weight limit does not make the Cabrio the roomier choice. The Atlas is longer and wider outside; the Cabrio is taller outside. Neither set establishes usable space for your cat. Ask for clear inside floor length, width and height with the intended bedding, plus the open doorway width and height. Our carrier measuring checklist separates those questions; the at-home fit check explains what to observe once the carrier arrives.

Why we choose the Atlas 20 Open

The Ferplast specification gives this exact black size-20 variant an opening metal roof grid, front door, side ventilation and snap latches joining the upper and lower sections. You can remove the upper shell for cleaning and for access when the veterinary team wants the cat to remain in the base.

That combination fits the practical carrier features recommended by International Cat Care: a rigid plastic body, roof access and a removable top. It is the design that earns the recommendation; we are not assigning it a crash-test rating or an escape-proof guarantee.

The included cotton cushion is washable. Keep the exact care label and manufacturer's assembly guidance with the carrier. The Open, EL and Deluxe Open ranges have different designs and measurements, so do not substitute one because a listing title contains “Atlas”.

Before the first journey, assemble it fully and check the front door, roof grid, shell clips and handle while it is empty. A closure that does not engage properly needs resolving before a cat goes inside. Supporting the base while carrying it helps keep the load level.

When the Catit Cabrio makes more sense

The Cabrio's manufacturer page shows its roof opening to the left and right, giving access without using the front door. That is the useful upgrade if a narrow opening is the problem you are trying to solve. Its slide-out bowls can be accessed separately at the front.

Its extra openings also mean extra assembly and fastening steps. Catit's instructions and the manufacturer text on the UK listing emphasise correct alignment so the side and top clamps engage. Read the Cabrio assembly sheet and practise opening and securing it without the cat. If the closures remain awkward or do not seat properly, resolve that rather than improvising a repair.

The Blue Grey listing showed buying options without a featured offer on 17 October 2026. The link opens the exact model, but does not choose a marketplace seller for you. Check the seller, dispatch source, delivery and returns on the offer you select. The wider access may be worth paying for; the colour is unlikely to improve the journey.

Hard plastic, soft bag or backpack?

  • Routine vet trip: choose a rigid carrier you can support level, with front entry, roof access and a removable top. That is the case for our Atlas starting pick.
  • You need more roof access: choose the Cabrio for its roof opening to both sides, provided you can comfortably assemble and fasten it. A higher weight ceiling alone is not a reason to change.
  • Storage space is tight: measure the cupboard and carrying route before buying either rigid box. A folding fabric bag saves storage space, but that does not settle floor support, usable space, cleaning or access at the practice.
  • The walk or stairs are difficult: check the empty carrier weight as well as your cat's weight, and whether you can support the base along your actual route. If the combination is unmanageable, ask your practice about a workable transport option before ordering.

For vet visits, International Cat Care favours sturdy plastic over soft fabric carriers for cleanability and access. A small cupboard does not make a carrier that collapses around the cat a better fit. Cats Protection advises against backpack carriers because movement and limited space can make them unsuitable.

Flying or using public transport? Get the actual operator's carrier and animal requirements for your service before choosing a model. This vet-trip shortlist does not establish airline acceptance. A seatbelt feature is a securing instruction to check, rather than a crash-test certificate.

Check before buying

  • Actual fit: enough room to stand, turn and lie comfortably with the intended bedding. Ask for usable inside dimensions and clear opening measurements if they are missing.
  • Owner fit: the outside size fits your car, storage space and carrying route. Add the cat's weight to the carrier's weight when considering what you can carry.
  • Exact variant: match the model, size and opening design. Our links target Atlas 20 Open black and Cabrio Blue Grey.
  • Fastenings and condition: check every closure, the shell and the handle after assembly and before each trip.
  • Journey rules: these are everyday carrier recommendations, not airline approvals. Ask the actual operator about your service and follow the maker's car-securing instructions. A seatbelt provision is not evidence of crash certification.
  • Complete order: exact offers rechecked 17 October 2026. Atlas had an in-stock Amazon offer; Cabrio had no featured offer. Check the selected seller, delivered total and returns. Neither link guarantees the same offer for every buyer.

Cleaning and making it familiar

Remove bedding and any debris after a soiled journey. Clean the body according to its instructions, rinse as required and let it dry fully before replacing bedding. For routine carrier care, Cats Protection recommends mild non-toxic soap and water. Do not assume all disinfectants or cushion wash cycles suit both products.

If another cat has used it, our borrowed-carrier cleaning checks cover the hygiene questions worth asking. For suspected infectious illness or a carrier you cannot adequately clean, ask the vet before reusing it.

Then leave it available at home with familiar bedding. A carrier that appears only before an appointment has a rather limited social life. Our introduction guide explains how to build up from a quiet open carrier to brief door closure and carrying.

What we would choose

For a cat who fits, the Atlas 20 Open is our first choice for everyday vet trips. Its access, removable shell and supplied washable cushion cover the practical jobs without adding a complicated buying decision. Choose the Cabrio when its broader opening solves a specific access problem.

Sources and selection

This is a researched buying guide. Model specifications and fit research were checked 6 October 2026; exact UK Amazon offers, Catit’s product page, both assembly sheets and the linked International Cat Care and Cats Protection guidance were rechecked 17 October.
