The running cost of a self-cleaning litter box comes from compatible litter, waste liners, optional odour-control parts, electricity and sometimes an app subscription. The machine may use litter efficiently, but it does not make litter free. Calculate each repeat purchase before allowing the glossy app screen to do the budgeting.

Litter is usually the important variable
Do not compare bag prices until you have checked compatibility. A cheap pellet your machine cannot sift has no useful price per kilogram. The Neakasa M1 Plus has the narrowest documented choice here. The PETKIT PURA MAX 2 is the most flexible on paper because it supplies separate sifters for larger and finer clumping litter.
Automatic sifting may reduce clean litter discarded with clumps, but the saving depends on the litter, clump quality, settings and cat. Do not put a manufacturer's best-case waste claim into your budget as guaranteed income. Measure the bag before and after switching.
Liners and odour products
First establish whether a branded liner or deodoriser is required, recommended or optional. Those words have different effects on annual cost. Check the manual for dimensions and installation; an apparently similar bag is not useful if it blocks a sensor or prevents the drawer sealing.
For the PETKIT PURA MAX 2, the N50 deodoriser and purifying liquid are sold as compatible odour-control additions. Budget them if you plan to use them; the basic cleaning cycle is the machine's main job. For the PETLIBRO Luma, Petlibro gives an approximate three-month replacement guide for its carbon deodoriser and litter mat in a one-cat home. “As needed” remains the more honest household interval.
Do you need the subscription?
The PETLIBRO Luma can operate without one. Petlibro lists live video, visit logs and immediate alerts in its core service. Its Video Cloud AI comparison showed Standard at £99.99/year and Premium at £149.99/year on 17 October 2026, with different video-history allowances. Those displayed prices were alongside higher crossed-out prices; check the applicable renewal and cancellation terms. Three years at unchanged displayed rates would add £299.97 or £449.97. That is subscription arithmetic, not a guaranteed future bill.
Decide which paid feature changes a real action. If you only want to know whether the tray was used, the free record may be enough. A subscription that is merely interesting for two weeks is an expensive method of discovering that your cat visits the toilet at night.
Electricity and warranty
The adapters show maximum rated input, not continuous consumption. Actual use changes with cleaning cycles, standby, cameras and fans. If electricity cost matters, measure it with a suitable plug-in energy monitor over a representative week and multiply the measured kWh by your current tariff.
Read warranty length, seller route, return window and who pays return freight before buying. An expensive machine that cannot be used while repaired also needs a backup tray. We do not turn warranty cover into a monthly saving because it does not guarantee every fault, consumable or inconvenience will be covered.
The sensible budget
Add the machine price, three years of likely consumables and any subscription you genuinely plan to keep. Divide by 36 only after you have included all of them. Compare that monthly figure with your present tray and litter cost, then ask whether the avoided scooping is worth the difference.
