What litter can you use in a self-cleaning litter box?

Exact-model rules for clumping, tofu, clay, mineral and mixed litter, plus the materials and grain sizes to avoid.

Kieran Simpson · Published · 4 min read

Most self-cleaning litter boxes need fast, firm clumps and particles that pass through a particular sifter. “Clumping litter” is only the start of the answer: the material, grain size and supplied filter still have to match the exact machine.

Exact-model manufacturer litter rules rechecked 6 October 2026. A material name alone does not prove the grains fit.
ModelDocumented compatible litterDo not useBuying consequence
Neakasa M1 PlusFast-clumping, scoopable bentonite or mineral litter; particles up to 3mm diameter and 10mm length.Highly absorbent non-clumping, loosely clumping, newspaper or wood pellets; grains outside the filter limit.Choose this only if you are happy to stay within its narrower litter specification.
PETKIT PURA MAX 2Clumping tofu or mixed litter with P99022; finer bentonite, mineral or clay with P99023; particles at most 12mm long and 3mm across.Non-clumping litter and particles outside the applicable sifter limit. Our most flexible researched pick when keeping a familiar clumping material matters.
PETLIBRO LumaClumping litter; round-hole filter for small grains and long-pellet filter for tofu or mixed litter.Non-clumping crystal or pine litter; ultra-fine grass-seed or cassava litter.A broad material choice, but the correct supplied filter still has to be fitted.

Check the current Neakasa filter limits, PETKIT sifter specification and Petlibro Luma filter guidance separately from the purchase links. A retailer destination tells you where to buy; it does not establish compatibility.

Why fast clumping matters

The cycle has to separate a formed clump from clean litter. If the litter clumps slowly or breaks apart, wet material can smear inside the drum or fall back through the sifter. A longer delay may help compatible litter finish clumping, but it cannot turn an incompatible material into the right one.

Start with the manufacturer's default delay and litter level. Do not exceed the fill line in the hope that more litter will make the box more automatic. Too much or too little can affect weighing, rotation and separation.

Measure the grain, not the marketing phrase

Tofu litter can be sold as short granules, long pellets or mixed shapes. Clay can range from fine grains to larger pieces. The bag may say “automatic litter box compatible” without naming your model or sifter. Check the maker's particle limit, the filter fitted to the machine and the litter maker's actual dimensions where available.

Neakasa's stated maximum is 3mm across and 10mm long. The exact PETKIT P9902 manual (PDF pages 5 and 7) distinguishes the two sifters and limits grains to 12mm long and 3mm across. Petlibro identifies two filters by shape but does not turn every clumping bag into a verified match.

Do not change the toilet and litter at once if you can avoid it

If the current litter is compatible, use it during introduction. If it is not, change the litter gradually in the old tray before asking the cat to accept the new machine. That separates “I dislike this litter” from “the toilet has started rotating”, which is useful because cats rarely provide written troubleshooting notes.

Keep an ordinary tray available and watch for avoidance, accidents or discomfort. Our general litter guide covers texture, scent and clumping beyond machine compatibility.

What if the bag does not publish grain size?

  1. Ask the litter manufacturer for maximum particle width and length, not an average.
  2. Ask the machine manufacturer to confirm the exact litter and sifter combination in writing.
  3. Do not describe a retailer review or a similar-looking grain as verified compatibility.
  4. Keep the receipt and check return terms before opening several bags.

We have not labelled our usual Sanicat litter as compatible with these machines because the exact grain dimensions needed for that claim were not independently confirmed. An affiliate link is not evidence, however convenient that would be.

Which machine gives you the most choice?

Choose the PETKIT PURA MAX 2 when documented litter flexibility is a priority. Its two specified sifters make the choice clearer than a general “most clumping litter” promise. The PETLIBRO Luma is another broad option if its larger size, camera and price suit. Buy the Neakasa M1 Plus only when its fine bentonite/mineral requirement fits the household.

Compare the machines in our UK buying guide, then add the litter and refill price using the running-cost worksheet.

Compatible litter can still perform badly when the level, sifter or delay is wrong. The troubleshooting table separates those problems, while the maintenance guide covers residue and deep cleaning.

Before buying the open-top model, use our Neakasa M1 Plus verdict to check whether its narrower litter rules fit the household.

For the machine with two supplied sifters, use our PETKIT PURA MAX 2 verdict to check the exact litter rules and trade-offs.
