Who should buy the Neakasa M1 Plus?
Buy the Neakasa M1 Plus when the cat already prefers an open litter tray, is comfortable stepping up 35.2cm and uses a fast-clumping mineral or bentonite litter that fits Neakasa's filter limits. It makes the most sense when daily scooping is the job you are paying to remove and somebody will still check the cat, waste drawer and machine each day.
The open top is the reason it leads our shortlist. It leaves the cat with an unobstructed view and more than one obvious route out, rather than asking her to enter a dark opening in a rotating drum. That can make the change less visually dramatic for a cat accustomed to an ordinary open tray. It does not guarantee acceptance, and it does not make a high entrance low.
Skip it if the cat is elderly, recovering, has reduced mobility or simply finds that step awkward. The full automatic litter-box comparison includes a lower-entry alternative. Keep an ordinary tray available during the transition whichever machine you choose.
The measurements that decide the purchase

Manufacturer-stated M1 Plus specifications, checked 6 October 2026. Resting size and operating space are different measurements.
| Resting outside dimensions | 52.5 × 59.1 × 51.3cm, in the manufacturer’s published axis order; confirm its dimension diagram for a fixed enclosure |
|---|---|
| Operating height and placement | 64cm maximum operating height; at least 70cm vertical placement space |
| Entrance height | 35.2cm |
| Machine weight | 10.35kg |
| Stated cat weight range | 1–15kg for automatic operation; use Kitten Mode below 1kg |
| Litter chamber | 7.17 litres; Neakasa says the first fill takes about 5–6kg |
| Waste bin | 11.23 litres; manufacturer claim of up to 14 days for one cat |
| Noise claim | 50dB or less |
| Connectivity | Android and iOS app; the previous settings continue without internet, but activity will not update in the app |
The M1 Plus specification distinguishes its 51.3cm resting height from a 64cm maximum operating height and at least 70cm of vertical placement space. Keep the front approach clear and leave room to remove the waste drawer and chamber. Use a firm, dry, level floor, with the machine itself off carpet or a litter mat; contact with nearby objects can disturb the weight sensors.
Mark the full working area with tape and use our measurement and ownership-cost planner before ordering. A machine that fits between two walls but cannot be emptied or washed does not fit.
What the automatic cleaning actually changes
After an accepted visit and the chosen delay, the chamber rotates gradually. Clean litter passes through the filter and clumped waste falls into the drawer. The machine then returns the litter bed to its usable position. Auto, manual, timer and emptying modes are listed on the current UK product page.
This replaces scooping after each visit. It does not replace looking. Check the entrance and litter level, confirm that the waste drawer is available, and notice changes in how often the cat visits. The manufacturer's 14-day figure describes capacity under its conditions; it is not an instruction to ignore the machine for a fortnight.
Neakasa says six pairs of infrared sensors and four weight sensors pause cleaning when the cat touches or enters the machine. Those are material protections, but they depend on correct assembly, a stable floor and the cat meeting the operating rules. Use our automatic litter-box safety guide before enabling automatic mode.
The litter restriction is easy to underestimate
The Neakasa M1 Plus works with fast-clumping scoopable litter whose particles fit through the filter: up to 3mm in diameter and 10mm long according to Neakasa. The maker recommends granular bentonite or mineral litter and excludes highly absorbent non-clumping litter, loosely clumping products, newspaper and wood pellets.
A bag saying “for automatic litter boxes” is not enough. Check its material and particle size. Poor or slow clumping can turn an automatic clean into a smear, while oversized grains can be rejected with the waste. Our compatible litter guide compares the exact model rules.
Cleaning and ongoing costs
The litter chamber and waste bin are removable and washable; the powered base is not. Neakasa's current routine says to empty the litter through the machine first, unplug it, wash the removable parts and let them dry completely before reassembly. Our automatic litter-box cleaning guide sets out the daily, weekly and deep-clean sequence.
Neakasa says any bag that fits the waste drawer can be used, which avoids locking the owner into branded liners. The box currently includes two rolls of bags and a tracking mat. Repeat costs still include compatible litter, bags, electricity and any optional odour accessory. Put your own prices into our running-cost worksheet; the purchase price is only the first line.
What current buyers report
The exact Amazon UK listing showed 4.0 out of five from 4,598 global ratings on 6 October 2026. Amazon also displayed a “frequently returned item” notice. Neither signal explains an individual return; inspect the machine and its functions while the return window is open.
The visible UK feedback is mixed in useful ways. Positive reports commonly describe quick setup, cats accepting the open design, easier daily cleaning and effective waste separation. Critical reports mention difficult Wi-Fi setup, inaccurate distinction between similarly weighted cats, the bin filling sooner than the maximum claim, litter scatter, worn liners and failures or support problems. These are owner reports rather than controlled tests, and their cats, litter, firmware and maintenance differ.
The practical response is not to average those experiences into false certainty. Test the functions you are paying for while the return period is open: run manual cycles, check every sensor interruption, confirm app records, inspect for leaks, empty the drawer and remove the washable chamber. If a fault appears, document it and use the retailer or manufacturer process promptly.
The app is useful, with limits
The app can show visit records, cat weight, litter level and alerts, and can control cleaning modes remotely. It may help reveal that a cat's routine has changed. It cannot tell you why, distinguish two similarly weighted cats perfectly or replace looking at waste and behaviour. Treat it as a household log, not a veterinary instrument.
Neakasa says the machine continues with its previous settings if the internet disconnects, although new activity will not reach the app. That is useful resilience. It does not make remote operation a substitute for somebody being able to check the cat and machine in person.
How to introduce it without wasting the purchase
- Put the machine in the measured location and leave the old tray nearby.
- Use familiar litter only if it meets the exact compatibility limits.
- Leave automatic cleaning off for a timid cat during the first days.
- Let the cat investigate; do not place or trap her inside.
- Run a manual cycle when the cat is elsewhere and relaxed.
- Enable automatic mode only after confident use and when the cat meets the weight rule.
Our full introduction plan explains what to do when the cat pauses, watches or refuses. Acceptance can take longer than a return window, which is another reason not to remove the familiar tray immediately.
Neakasa M1 Plus verdict
The Neakasa M1 Plus is our starting pick for a healthy adult cat who prefers an open tray. The open top is a meaningful design choice and ordinary bags keep one repeat cost flexible. Choose it for those features when the 35.2cm step, fine clumping litter and 70cm vertical placement space fit your household.
The 35.2cm entrance, narrow litter specification and Amazon return warning prevent a blanket recommendation. Measure first, keep the old tray, test every paid-for function promptly and retain the packaging until you know the machine works for this cat and room.

M1 Plus specifications, the dedicated litter FAQ and the exact UK Amazon offer were rechecked 17 October 2026. The dimensions table retains its original 6 October check date. Aggregate ratings and the return warning below remain dated 6 October observations; no such warning was displayed at the 17 October check. Individual UK feedback retains its 17 September review date.
