Cat tree size guide: measure your room and cat

Check the whole outline, usable resting space and fixing position, with a free one-page printable sizing worksheet.

The useful measurement is rarely “large”. That can describe the tree, the cat or the font on the box. Here is how to put actual dimensions beside the buying decision.

Measure the room at the intended position

Record available width, depth and height in centimetres. For a ceiling-mounted pole, take the height at the actual fixing point rather than elsewhere in the room. Note skirting boards and obstructions that prevent the base or pole sitting where the drawing suggests.

Open doors, cupboards and drawers. Check curtains, nearby furniture and everyday walking routes. Allow room to approach, clean and inspect the tree. There is no single clearance figure that covers every product and room: use the exact instructions and the real route through your home.

Check the whole outline, not just the base

Write down the full assembled width and depth, including baskets, platforms, steps and their final orientation. Keep the base dimensions in a separate note. Packaging measurements belong to the delivery, not the floor plan.

Mark the whole outline temporarily on the floor and check the space above it. A platform can conflict with a windowsill or shelf even when the base fits below. Do not take dimensions from the size of the cat in a promotional photograph.

Measure a useful resting space

Start with a place your cat already uses comfortably. Note the clear length and width she occupies when resting in her usual position, without restraining or stretching her. Use that as a comparison point for the unobstructed area inside the proposed bed or platform.

Check raised rims, cushion edges, entrances and the width available where the cat turns around. An outer frame size is not the same as clear sleeping space. If the listing omits the useful measurement, ask the supplier for it. Do not turn a product’s weight claim into proof that its bed is roomy enough.

The figures describe different parts. They do not establish which finished tree takes less room. Omlet’s component dimension sheet helps identify the parts; the complete configuration still needs a plan.

Omlet Freestyle platform has a 56 by 56cm outer frame; check the clear cushion area separately, plus the whole layout and actual fixing position.
Omlet’s dimension sheet states the 56 × 56cm outer platform. The dashed inner area is conceptual, with no claimed usable cushion measurement. Compare the clear resting area and the full assembled layout before choosing. Sources: Omlet dimension sheet, PDF page 4.Original diagram: The Cat Standard. Trace the route up and down

Look at the first step, each landing and the return to the floor. Use your cat’s normal movement to judge which arrangements deserve a closer look; a universal recommended jump gap would be misleading. If mobility has changed, ask your vet rather than expecting a taller or shorter tree to solve it.

For a shared tree, consider whether one resting cat blocks another’s route. Include the access space in your room plan, not just the furniture outline.

Confirm the fixing before calling it a fit

A dimension match is not an installation approval. Read the exact model’s manual and confirm the required wall or ceiling attachment, suitable location and any permission needed. Get professional fitting advice when the surface or fixing is uncertain.

Our floor-to-ceiling versus freestanding comparison explains why both of our tall-tree examples need attachment. Do not leave a restraint out simply because the base fits neatly in a corner.

Leave enough access to remove the parts you will clean and inspect the connections. Our model-specific cleaning guide covers the selected trees; the replacement-parts guide shows what to record before ordering a worn component.

Use the worksheet without an account

Download and print the PDF, or copy these headings into your own notes. It is a static worksheet for writing on; it does not send measurements anywhere or automatically approve a product.

  1. The room: location, available width/depth and ceiling height; note obstructions and walking routes.
  2. The cat: useful resting space, comfortable approach, step intervals and route down.
  3. The exact tree: model/variant, full outline, usable bed space and the source of each figure. Mark missing fields as unknown.
  4. Fixing and budget: required attachment, permission, goods, extra parts, delivery and fitting.

Turn the measurements into a choice

Proceed when the complete outline and resting space work, the route makes sense and the specified fixing can be completed. If one of those remains unknown, get that answer before ordering. A smaller base does not compensate for an unusable bed.

For a complete tower, return to our large-cat buying guide. For a configurable layout, read the Omlet Freestyle review and complete setup costs. The general cat-tree guide covers lower resting places and other layouts.

The example figures are manufacturer-stated, checked against the Feandrea PCT003N01 brand listing on Amazon UK and Omlet’s linked dimension sheet on 2 October 2026.
