A self-cleaning litter box needs more than its catalogue footprint. Allow for the cat's approach, the required gap from walls, the step or mat, the waste drawer, a nearby socket and enough room to remove washable parts. Measure the working space, not just the plastic shell.

Manufacturer-stated dimensions and placement instructions checked 6 October 2026. Resting size does not include operating, access or service space.
| Model | Machine dimensions | Entry and floor | Clearance to plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Neakasa M1 Plus | 52.5 × 59.1 × 51.3cm at rest; maximum operating height 64cm; 10.35kg empty. | 35.2cm entry height; firm, level, dry floor; not on carpet or a litter mat. | At least 70cm vertical placement space; keep the open top and approach clear, with room to remove the drawer and chamber. No wall contact. |
| PETKIT PURA MAX 2 | 62 × 53.8 × 55.2cm; about 10kg empty. | 20cm entry height; hard, level floor. | Hard, flat floor without wall contact; entrance unobstructed, with room for the drawer and dismantling. Keep enough room to service it. |
| PETLIBRO Luma | 59.2 × 57.3 × 71.4cm; about 15kg empty. | Petlibro lists a 44.2cm entrance dimension; hard, flat floor, never carpet. | At least 10cm around the machine, plus approach, step and maintenance room. |
Verify the latest diagrams and floor rules on the Neakasa M1 specification, PETKIT PURA MAX 2 manual and Petlibro Luma UK page. These evidence links are separate from the retailer links.
Luma retailer discrepancy, checked 17 October 2026: Petlibro states 59.2 × 57.3 × 71.4cm for PLLB001; Amazon ASIN B0FPX3GGN7 lists 64 × 62 × 77cm. The table retains the manufacturer-stated figures. Do not assume the larger set is packaging: confirm the exact unit and installed clearance before building a fixed enclosure.
The first two manufacturers present dimensions in different axis orders on different pages, so use the current dimension diagram before building furniture around the unit. Our numbers describe the complete machine, not the usable toilet area inside.
The masking-tape test
- Mark the machine's width and depth on the floor.
- Add the manufacturer's wall gap on every relevant side.
- Mark the included mat or optional step in front.
- Open the room door, cupboard and shower screen through their full travel.
- Stand where you would pull the waste drawer and lift out washable parts.
- Walk the cat's route to the entrance without stepping over another resource.
If the drawing works only while nobody opens the bathroom door, it does not work.
Why the floor matters
Weight sensors are part of how these machines detect a cat and record use. PETKIT and Petlibro require a hard, level surface; Petlibro explicitly says never carpet. Neakasa likewise warns that carpet or a mat beneath the machine can affect its sensors. Put a tracking mat in front where permitted, not under the feet.
Check that the loaded machine does not rock and that no foot sits on a grout ridge or threshold. Do not tilt the unit to make it clear a skirting board. Choose a different location or machine.
The entrance can rule a model out
The open-top Neakasa M1 Plus removes an enclosed doorway but asks the cat to negotiate a 35.2cm entrance. Neakasa sells steps separately; needing one adds depth in front. The PETKIT PURA MAX 2 has a 20cm threshold, the lowest clearly stated entrance height in our shortlist.
Measure your cat's comfortable step, not their theoretical athletic career. Senior cats, cats with arthritis, short-legged cats and kittens may need a lower entrance or ordinary low-sided tray. Our general tray-size guide explains why overall dimensions do not guarantee enough usable room inside.
Power, Wi-Fi and water
All three are mains-powered. Position the cable so the cat cannot chew it and the machine can be unplugged without moving furniture. Keep the powered base away from splashing and follow the manual before washing any part. A bathroom socket and electrical installation must be appropriate for the room; do not solve a location problem with an unsafe extension lead.
The PETKIT PURA MAX 2 uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. The PETLIBRO Luma lists 2.4 and 5GHz. Check signal where the tray will actually sit, particularly behind thick bathroom walls. Core offline behaviour varies by model; an app connection does not replace physical access.
Keep the ordinary placement rules
Choose a quiet, accessible position away from food and water, where the cat cannot be cornered by another animal. Do not hide the machine in a cupboard that blocks airflow, entry or the required clearance. Our litter-tray placement guide covers the cat's route, privacy and multi-cat resources.
Which fits the room best?
Choose the PETKIT PURA MAX 2 when the 20cm entrance solves an access problem and its 62cm width fits. Choose the Neakasa M1 Plus when open-top access matters and the cat can manage 35.2cm, with extra front and overhead room. Choose the PETLIBRO Luma only when its 71.4cm height and 10cm surrounding gap fit without negotiation.
Then compare price and features in our UK automatic litter-box guide and read the model safety limits before ordering.
If the installed machine reports a false weight or placement error, follow the model-specific floor, clearance and reset checks.
Record these measurements in the printable automatic litter box planner, alongside the socket, washing route and old-tray space.

Sources and scope
Dimensions and placement instructions rechecked 6 October 2026 against the current M1 Plus specification, exact PETKIT P9902 manual and Luma UK guidance. These are manufacturer-stated measurements. Neakasa’s 70cm figure is a vertical placement allowance, not a side gap. Confirm each dimension diagram and servicing access before building a fixed enclosure.
