Read the label on your unit and find its manual before removing anything. Similar-looking feeders can have different electrical parts, seals and cleaning instructions. A hopper coming off the base does not, on its own, grant it access to the sink.

The C500 document is Pet Mate's instruction manual hosted by a retailer. Match the revision and model to your own instructions. These are care examples, not a universal disassembly guide; use your supplied manual if its instructions differ.

Can the whole feeder go in the dishwasher? No. Neither example permits that. Where dishwasher permission is absent, don't infer it from a stainless steel finish or a detachable part.

How to clean an automatic cat feeder, step by step

This checklist helps organise the job around your manual. It does not replace the model's instructions for releasing clips, removing a rotor or switching off backup power.

1. Plan around the next meal. Have a clean ordinary bowl available while the feeder is out of service. Note the clock, meal times and portion settings before you start, in case disconnecting power resets them.
2. Stop and isolate the machine as instructed. Disconnect mains power with dry hands and follow the manual for battery-powered operation. Unplugging a feeder with working backup batteries may leave it able to dispense. Don't put fingers or tools into an active mechanism.
3. Empty it and separate permitted parts. Remove remaining food before cleaning the hopper or tray. Follow the illustrated sequence, keeping seals and small components together. Leave electrical housings closed.
4. Remove accessible crumbs and residue. Use the cloth or cleaning tool permitted for that component. Pay attention to corners and the outlet. Don't force a brush into an inaccessible mechanism or pour water down the chute to clear it.
5. Clean each part by its approved method. Check instructions for detergent, water temperature and dishwasher placement. Where detergent is allowed, rinse it away thoroughly. Keep the powered base, connectors and battery compartment away from the sink.
6. Allow washed parts to dry completely. Check seams, corners and the dispensing path before refilling. A dry-looking outside can conceal a wet corner. Don't accelerate drying with heat unless the manual permits it.
7. Reassemble and check operation. Seat the hopper or tray, seals, bowl and lid correctly. Reconnect power only when the unit is ready, then work through the restart checks below.

If food has become damp, visibly mouldy or contaminated by cleaning water, don't tip it back into the clean feeder. If water reaches electrical components, keep the unit out of use and contact the manufacturer before reconnecting it.

How often should you clean it?

Use the model's cleaning schedule and inspect food-contact surfaces routinely. Treat the bowl and the hopper as separate jobs: an exposed bowl may need attention while the reservoir still contains food. Follow the food manufacturer's handling guidance too, especially for wet-food trays.

Don't wait for a scheduled deep clean if you find damp food, residue or a spill. Equally, “clean weekly” is not permission to wash an electrical component weekly. The method matters as much as the calendar.

Refilling is a useful opportunity to look inside the hopper and check the outlet. It is easy to keep adding food and never quite reach the bottom of the problem.

Do you need special cleaner or replacement parts?

Start with the supplies your manual allows. An existing clean cloth or suitable soft brush may be sufficient; a bottle labelled “pet friendly” does not establish compatibility with your feeder's food-contact surfaces or electronics.

For models using a drying sachet, buy the exact compatible replacement and fit it only in its designated holder. Keep it out of the food and away from your cat. Don't wash or attempt to regenerate disposable sachets unless the manufacturer explicitly provides a method.

Catit's PIXI desiccant pack is part 43724; Catit specifies replacement every 30 days. That interval belongs to that product, not every feeder. Its manual also says not to use a visibly damaged pad.

Check replacement bowls, seals and dispensing parts against the exact model number. If a listing says only “universal”, ask for compatibility confirmation. Replace damaged food-contact parts rather than trying to scrub a crack out of existence.

What to check after reassembly

• Fit: all parts seated, lid secured and food path unobstructed.
• Settings: correct clock, feeding times and portions; no accidentally added manual feed.
• Delivery: observe the next scheduled meal while you are home. Confirm food reaches the bowl, not just that an app records an event.

The C500 manual includes bowl alignment and supervised operation in sections 1 and 4. Follow its sequence for that rotating-tray design rather than treating it like a hopper dispenser.
